Hi Brent.
This sound very convincing for me, but I seems that the problem happpen in flash read routines, if I recall correctly. At this time I am out of the office (on summer short vacations) and with no chance for experiences. Later I will read the appnote. I am quite sure that with internal oscillator the problem will not show.

Just to avoid any finger touching this area, we put a little bit of plastic and problem solved.
