In some (many? most?) cases, the PC software that you use to "observe all registers, ram, accumalator, etc" will be the same for both simulation and OCD.

This is certainly the case wiht Keil's uVision:


Note that there is only one "uVision Debugger" - which connects to both "Device Simulation" and "Target Hardware"

No doubt others are similar
