Erik, what if one is not looking for an excuse? What if one simply wants to use a DIP package. Until they become impossible to purchase there is nothing at all wrong with them, (except that they are not the "latest thing"). You mention cost. I think many components are cheaper in SMT packages but not all. (What if the design is not cost-sensitive?) Not every thing in electronics is manufactured in the thousands.
