DIP package ... there is nothing at all wrong with them,
oh yes, there is, the long leads to the corners makes all kinds og havoc re the decoupling of chips with fast rise/fall times. regardless of your clock frequency todays derivatives have much faster rise/fall times than yesterdays, even with a chip capable of 33MHz (the clocking capability representative of the rise/fall times) you can get in big doo-doo with a DIL package. I have had problems with SMT packages when some i**** laid it out so the distance to the decoupling cap was ~ 1 inch!!, a correct layout solved the problem. Unfortunately many still believe that a wire is a wire, at any high frequency it is not, it is a bunch of inductors and capacitors. Erik |
