Last 10 years i worked with such "incorrect" circuit on more than 12 computers. Only 1 (my home computer) rejected incomming data, and this was solved, using resistor between rx-input and non-active output of PC port.
This discussion comes again and again here on 8052.com. Correct is to say - some PC's will work with such "wrong" circut - it depends on how is builded RS232 tranceiver chip on PC.

P.S. I did never see clean MAX232 on mother board. For me some is allmost every.
