True, but a MOSFET gate likely needs more drive than most microcontroller outputs can provide. An external level-shifter/driver might be the ticket.

Having said that, I'm looking at the Silicon Labs ARM things, and the chips have a small handful of high-drive pins on one of the ports. And the bonus is that these pins have a separate I/O supply, up to 6V, which means they were thinking about logic-level MOSFET drive ...
