Well, as their stated aim is to replace 8-bitters, being 5V-able would be a massive plus to that end...

you will have to redesign anyhow, so what is the issue changing the Vcc?

I freely admit that many moons ago I were a 3V3 resister, but that is a loooong time ago. I have had no reson to regret my change of attitude whatsoever.
