While they proclaim 8-bit replacement, yet the LPC11xx and LPC8xx are *not* pin compatible with the LPC9xx/LPC7xx. This is in spite of the fact that the new LPC8xx's interconnect matrix allows to assign IO pins to the individual peripheral functions [almost] completely freely.

So much about how NXP cares about their loyal customers.
