It is all about time. The Time to be a productive C Programmer is less then the Time it take to be equally skilled ASM Programmer.
While you can turn out an ASM Program as quickly as a C programmer. I will assume the your code will be faster and smaller. maybe it fits into the next smaller chip. BUT, How long does it take to make more of you? How many years of slower coding before the newbie becomes as skilled. An extra week or two of programming my eat up all the savings of the moving to the next smaller chip. A big investment over the years.
