Sometimes known as "coulomb counting". With a healthy battery, this is reasonably accurate. With a dead battery that's no longer holding its charge properly, it no longer works. The ac adapter is now running warm only never hot and laptop stopped turning off after 3 hours. Thanks to all members for their suggestions on this problem. The laptop now runs like new.
