You can only do so much with a digital hearing aid since its a very small device. It is precisely because they are so small that they need very clever - and Patentable - stuff to make hearing aids (digital or otherwise) do all that they do! Every patient's hearing is different, and modern aids can be precisely tailored to the individual's needs. It is very difficult to get an aid that amplifies only "wanted" saounds, without also amplifying unwanted noise. It is difficult to make an aid with the same dynamic range as the human ear. The aid needs to have similar directional properties to the human ear. As well as audio pick-up, aids have to work with other "assistive listening" devices such as induction loops (AFILS). It is difficult to fit all this into something small enough to fit in or benind the ear. It is difficult to get all this to run for a reasonable time on battery that's small enough to fit... etc, etc, etc,... |
