One possibility occurs to me. Okay, in truth I don't know if it's feasible since I don't know anything about the layout of their location. But it there's room to do so, what about adding a solarium to the back of the building. The landlord would likely balk at adding a huge skylight to the existing building, but a small solarium (kit) could be added to the back such that it could be removed if they ever move out. I guess it depends on available space.
