No, it does not have to be manually settable; in fact, I say it's preferable that it is not manually settable! If users can fiddle with it, then they will mess it up sooner or later! :-( Much better, IMO, if it is fixed at manufacture and guaranteed to be globally unique - like the IMEI on a GSM device, or the MAC address on an ehternet device, or the serial number of a Maxim/Dallas 1-WireTM device, etc, etc,... |
