There's your basic problem: 10 years ago, this was not the kind of thing that "people in general" did - it was the kind of thing that was left to "technicians" or geeks.

And even then, anyone who's had any experience in customer support will know what a mess even those people could get themselves into by fiddling with DIP switches...!
