#152993 - Sloppy code
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hi Richard,

I have read the intercation between you and Craig and I tend to agree with Craig when it comes to powerful new OS that seem to get better and better with every passing day. I work quite intensively with LabVIEW and AutoCAD and to imagine these with anything other than WIN_95 / 98/ XP is a practical joke.

That said I must say that I fully agree with you on this statement :
It's like the software guys ... they like their work product to consume as much memory and hard disk space as is available, and even if it could fit in an 8KB EEPROM, they don't feel their job is done until it consumes 2 GB or RAM and 2 TB of HDD space.

Crazy is the word. Want to install a printer driver ? 99Mb!
Want to install a security patch ? 24Mb! Want to play a game ? 1 Gb !

I think its a cartel. The companys that make HDD / RAM / CPUs have told the software guys : Go ahead - don't ever optimize code - make it as large as possible - Time-To-Market is very important so don't waste time in compacting code. SO we had dBase load in less than 5 seconds with a poor 286 CPU and today the blazing Core-2 Duo at 2.5+Ghz takes 45 seconds to load my LabVIEW welcome screen.

Progress ???

Raghu
