#152907 - Disk failures Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Having recently suffered a disk failure on a laptop, I can emphasise the importance of backups. All my work gets backed up, so that wasn't really a problem. Recovery went as follows:
1. Order new disk, £50 and delivered next day. 2. Swap disk. Time taken, 10 minutes. 3. Re-install Windows part 1. Two hours, and I can't get the supplied video drivers to install. 4. Re-install Windows part 2. Pay professional to install Windows. Time taken (and paid for), five hours. 5. Install editors, compilers, CAD programs, revision control software etc. Time taken, 5 hours. 6. Restore work from backups. Time taken, 20 minutes. From memory, my record on PCs and laptops is something like this. 1 laptop motherboard failure after 4 years 1 laptop disk failure 7 PCs retired as being too slow 1 PC with RAID5 had two disks fail simultaneously! |
