#152989 - DOS vs Windows
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Richard Erlacher said:
Well, there are things for which DOS works WAY better than Windows, particularly if you drive custom I/O.

I misunderstood you. I thought you did development under DOS. That would seem to be a waste of productivity. But I fully understand that there are certain applications--usually automated or embedded--that are much better under DOS for the reasons you mentioned.

I just can't imagine developing under DOS.

The main reason I can get by with the DOS and very useful Win31x, is that they are never attached to the LAN or the internet. As a result, I've had no crashes, no data losses, etc, in over a decade with those boxes that do the important work.

What is "important work?" Again, if you're doing development under DOS, I think you're hurting your productivity. If you're doing your work under Windows or other GUIs and are targeting DOS, I can see that being useful. I wouldn't advocate using Windows for a stand-alone application that just has to work 24/7, reliably, forever. DOS is good for that. But it's not good for productivity.

Craig Steiner
