Three of the 4 drives I have had to recover were portables.

I believe that the directory was damaged when the drive was physically moved before the disk had fully come to a stop and the heads had retracted and locked.

The disk is a standard disk in a plastic case. It doesn't seem to have any features that make it "portable".

So, I advise that the portable disk never be moved while it is on, or immediately after it has been turned off.
