What OS and backup utility do you use, Craig? I use Microsoft Vista and I just use copy/paste to copy my two personal root directories to an external USB drive. I don't do incremental. I do full backups every time; in part because of my extremely simple backup procedure, and also because it's nice to just be able to connect the backup hard drive, go to the 2008-03-10 directory, and find *ALL* my data exactly as it existed at that date all in one place. It doesn't rely on a special program to access. Just plug and play. Backup utilities need to present the backup device in a way that masks it from the OS so that OS-based viruses, for example, don't "see" the device, and, hence, can't infect files not already infected on that device. I guess that's a valid requirement, but my main concern is actually failure of the hard drive more than virus infection. Of course I'm a one-man shop so it's a lot easier to protect against the risk of viruses than in a larger corporate environment. I've considered using NTBACKUP, which works under XP, but don't really know how effective it is for backup of the OS and registry. I don't backup the OS, installed programs, or the registry. If my OS gets infected or damaged, I would always reformat/reinstall from scratch on a brand new hard drive. The only thing that I worry about backing up is my own data. Regards, Craig Steiner |
