Just two points about backups that nobody seems to have mentioned yet. One is that they need to be physically separate from the original data, so that a fire or a robbery or something doesn't wipe out the backups along with the originals. It's not good enough to keep your backups on a computer or media that's stored in the same building as the originals.
The other is that you need to test your backups periodically to make sure that they are intact and accessible. Can you still read those CDs you burned five years ago? Does your current "unzip" tool work on files you saved with some other one? You need to discover problems like these before you actually need to restore from the backups. -- Russ |
