I am not arguing against modbus as ONE possibility I am arguing aginst it being pantyhose.


...who is trying to implement a master / slave protocol, on the RS485 hardware, it would be easy to start with a tried and tested and widely popular protocol which has lots of code on the net and very good testing software to test his software and hardware.


If modbus is used at something you connect to, it is, of course, manadatory. However you can achieve "industrial strength" with far simpler protocols, especially when using the 9bit mode.


And then move on to other protocols if required.
