Both you and I realise the tradeoff involved, so what is the point of the discussion? The standard involved in the discussion is Modbus, the code involved implements Modbus so anything else is immaterial. To reduce the fat would make it not compliant with Modbus so the vast amount of hardware, software and tools available for this would be of no use.

So, show me a documented protocol with wide industry support that uses async 56k baud that can poll 200 slaves in two seconds that has free tools.
