from Your post - You expect all 16 slaves to respond in same time, as fast as possible. In this case slaves will have conflict on XY wires and You need something like coaxial Ethernet or Token-rig or...
Change target or change thinking about RS485. RS485 can be used in 4-wire mode, but multiple slaves must wait question, before they answer. Master must ensure some timeout for every slave's answer. This is true for half and full duplex, when more than 2 devices utilize same bus.
