I'm not quite sure what you're saying here.

Do you mean that the master has a "process" that simply sends out polls without waiting for responses, and a separate "process" that just waits for "replies" to come in?

Thus, in effect, the the master's receive "process" gets unsolicited replies?

The usual way to do it is that the master polls one slave, and waits for its response before polling the next - which is naturally half-duplex!
