#138650 - COM Port re-assignment Responding to: ???'s previous message |
First a quick comment to say that I have seen Prolific adapters with EEPROM and also you should look in the INF file for some modifiable text.
Also, you'll find if you put a given device into a different usb port, the com number gets re-assigned. It also depends on how many you have plugged in and where at any given time. What's worse, is that if your application opens up a com port and then the USB device is unplugged and plugged back in, the COM port data connection is lost. I think all of the adapters are the same in this regard (it's a "feature" of the driver). We ended up writing our own (generic) USB to virtual COM port application that allows a person to put a sticker on their PC with a COM port # beside any given USB slot and allows for re-plugging on USB. This mimics true serial perfectly. For the virtual com stuff, look at Eltima.com. GB |
