The cheapy com ports usually don't implement the eeprom option that allows Windows to detect an actual device. Also, you'll find if you put a given device into a different usb port, the com number gets re-assigned. The earlier FTDI chips and the Prolific PL2303 are similar in these respects but the later FTDI FT232R series have built in eeprom. Is this is the problem you are finding? |
