There appears to be several versions of PL2303 around.
According to http://www.prolific.com.tw/support/f...e_v10B.pdf , the older H-suffix version did hot have provision for serial number in EEPROM, whereas the newer X and HX do. I am not sure whether the strings can or cannot be changed in the EEPROM an what would be the consequences of doing so on the drivers etc. The same document also mentiones "EEPROM write program", so it should be available (maybe on request?)
