Find me a legitimate reference (link) to "tow the line" or "towing the line" that means to pull ones weight and I'll bow down to your superior knowledge.
Yes, they did used to pull barges with a rope. I live very close to several canals, and have a good working knowledge of them. The phrase "toe the line" is spelt like that, and means to conform to a set of rules. See the last paragraph here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toe_the_line |
