'cept if you botch it and spring for a bunch of stuffed PCBs that turn out to have errors because of the human-based translation between the hand-drawn schematic and what got put on the layout ... well, that's one definition of false economy. I guess it depends on your definition of "really expensive." PCAD is expensive. Mentor Graphics is REALLY expensive. -a Right, hence my saying that you need to be careful when you do it. Like I said, I know of at least 3 engineers who have used this method exclusively over the past 10+ years to turn boards. Here and there there have been minor mistakes (nothing that cuts and jumpers can't fix), but then the guys (myself included) that use the schematic capture tools also make mistakes (wrong pinname here, bad netname there, etc). So again, as long as your careful, this method will totally work...you can also examine the gerbers carefully before sending to fab to avoid mistakes :). Altium Designer is on the order of 15k+. I call that really expensive. But yes, it does depend on your perspective :) D |
