I have used abrasive method many times and I have not damaged the chips. This was used on P89LPC908, AT89C2051, AT89C51, GAL16V8, GAL22V10, ATF22V10 and others. Maybe I am lucky but I think that you can take the risk. This is an easy and secure way.
