Thread in which Kai recomended a 555 for this aplication,

Post your variant circuit. 555 starts timing on release of trigger pin which makes it relatively easy to debounce an input switch.
A quick check is to monitor the timing cap voltage. It should rise to about .66 vcc in about 1.1 seconds at which time the led should turn off. what happens next is determined by your chosen circuit topography
