Note that the MAX233 is very similar to the MAX233A; the A version offers a higher slew rate to accomodate port speeds of up to 200000 bps, which is beyond the 115 Kbps speed capable by most PC's built-in serial ports! Take care, datasheet tells, that only 116kbps is guaranteed for the MAX233A! Where did you find this? The selection table on page 1 of the datasheet notes a data rate of 200 kbps for the MAX233A alongside a features note of "No external caps, high slew rate". This data rate is also referenced by the Quick View Datasheet. Kai Klaas said:
By the way, it's not at all a good idea to run a RS232 loop by higher transmission rates than 115kbps. For higher rates a much faster slew rate would be needed, but right this must not be, because of the lack of proper cable termination. RS232 is a rather slowly transmission technique, you cannot simply speed it up, without violating reliability.
Kai As for termination at high data rates, I can certainly see why that would be necessary. I wonder how the folks at Comtrol manage to get high data rates on their RocketPort cards and even higher data rates on their RocketPort Plus cards. Although I've used these cards with great success before, I've never tried using them at rates above 115200 bps. --Sasha Jevtic |
