From what I've read so far in this thread I think I understand that you have been able to see GPS to PC work. You have also had some success of having PC talk to the 8051. Like I show in the figure below:



Yet when you configure as shown in Scenario 3 it is not working.

Please clarify if these pictures are an accurate description of the topology of the trials that you've tried.

Now if in Scenario 1 you had the GPS connected to the PC without putting the MAX232 in between then I can see the problem with Scenario 3. The MAX232 performs two functions - level conversion AND logical inversion. So if the GPS can talk to PC without MAX232 then you will require inverters in the signal paths between GPS and 8051.
