Well, the module is sending correct NMEA sentences to the hyper-terminal when I directly connect it via the serial port(without the 8051) so I assume that it is configured originally to send NMEA sentences.

Added later: I'm sure it's in the NMEA mode. Otherwise it would never work with the hyperterminal. And the red LED (which lights up in my case) is an indicator of the NMEA mode.
