I've not yet encountered anyone who's successfully purchased NAND flash at volumes below 100k units per week. If this guy thinks he can buy one chip, he'd better guess again.

If he's wanting to interface a FLASH MEMORY CARD, that's a different issue, but he'd better have some extra money lying about then, too. The SD people want $4k for him to join their "club" and he'll need to be a member to keep up with SDA documents.

CF's not quite so bad, but the cards cost a lot more per bit.
