if you don't mind using Linux, Debian has some Spice tools and other electronics tools. some might also be available for Windows.

re eval boards, i just picked up a Freescale Coldfire board with CAN, ethernet, RS-232/485 and USB (host, device, OTG) for $93, and a TI MSP430 uC USB development stick for $22. haven't tried them yet, tho. also, this site (8052.com) has 8051 boards.
