Two monitors are ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Really?

Is it really inherently superior to have two monitors, rather than just one big monitor with the same total screen space?

I can see this advantage:

An advantage I find with 2 separate monitors (on the same PC) is that you can maximise an application in each one - rather than having to manually size them on a single monitor.

but I wouldn't go as far as to say that renders two monitors an absolute necessesity?

The maximize-in-one-display feature is very useful!

As for two instead of one big one ... two 1600-column displays (3200 horizontal columns total) or 1900-column displays (3800 horizontal) are an fsck of a lot less expensive than a 30" display with only 2560 columns!

And why stop at two...?

Why indeed! My desk isn't big enough for three!

I have room for the one 28" monitor, but I couldn't put more of them on the desktop in the lab.
