Tell you what, I do also use a watchdog, this external one in the MAX1232, and hope I will never need it. Many years ago we had an interesting thread here that was called "A watchdog for a watchdog?". It had to do with the many versions of "1232", like the DS1232, ADM1232, MAX1232 and a version from Temic and the interesting observation, that some of them showed strange lock-ups, became hot and only commenced their job after a total power-down and power-up. They were such unreliable, that we joked about using a watchdog for the watchdog. So, even a watchdog isn't foolproof. They can easily be hacked by ESD running over the board, for instance.
