As already noted, it is not necessary to have the same device at both ends.

However, it may well be convenient to you, as it means that you have only 1 module to deal with, 1 set of commands to learn, etc...

It is important to understand the difference between things that are essential, and things that are just beneficial, or expedient, or advantageous, etc...
