Yes, GPRS and other methods exists to transfer data from a vehicle. But GPRS would require the poor microcontroller to have a PPP client and a TCP/IP stack. Some GSM modems already contain a TCP/IP stack and may have special AT commands to create a TCP/IP connection and to read and write from the socket. Lower costs than using SMS but can increase the complexity a bit and greatly reduces the potential GSM modems/phones/modules. Incorporating a full TCP/IP stack and PPP client is most definitely a too big task for this project. No points scored to the complex airplane that never took to the air. Better limit the project and get something that works and can be demonstrated.
