As I said above, Grant could do just the same with SoftICE, with certain limitations. Sure, the limitations of the monitor are more severe than that of an on-chip debugger, but apparently, he does not want either, and he is after a real ICE. There's a lot of hum and buzz around the terms, and at the first glance it might seem that Atmel offers ICE for the AVRs - although deceiving, this is how they call the JTAG thingy, don't they.
