#151694 - Bavarian and Hochdeutsch Responding to: ???'s previous message |
My father was a Muenchner, and my mother is from Berlin. After the war, as the communists were taking over in the East, they moved, and took me with them, to Muenchen, and, as I developed, having been born near Berlin, frequently found myself speaking to my mother in Hochdeutsch, while speaking to everyone who spoke to me in the local Bavarian accent in that form. Nobody told me to do that, and adults often remarked how odd it was.
It always seemed normal to me. In the meantime (well over 50 years) I've almost completely forgotten the Bavarian accent, though I found it charming during my last visit. I learned to understand, but not speak, the Swabian dialect as well, but that was out of necessity, as I worked in and around Stuttgart for a time. RE |
