So the only way how to protect our IP is to use as much of the copy protection the chips offer as possible. So, I NEED to know everything about copy protection, lock bits etc., to protect MY locked code and stuff. Also, I would like to see bigger pressure exerted to the manufacturers to move the "safer" technologies employed e.g. in smartcards, to the "everydays'" microcontrollers. This is why I am HAPPY to see such discussions, and will continue to contribute to them links to general sources of knowledge on the topic, such as I did today, and maybe even more. To try to pretend that there are no thieves makes absolutely no sense, nor does hiding the fact that most locks can be picked by simple tools (btw. do you know the classics "MIT Guide to Lockpicking"?) ... whether this or that is moral or legal, the competition will eat you up, including your boots. This is a rough world. While you can get your car insured, and if eventually gets stolen, chances are you will be able to get a new one; you cannot insure your product in any way. The only thing you can do is to try to minimise the potential benefits of the thief while maximising his costs and
risks........... Does this sound as a legal/moral enough reason to investigate the "unlocking" problem? To be honest, Richard, I don't care... Jan It should be how to Protect Your Code rather then how to break open someone elses product .I have read so many views and would like to present mine . It has been proved beyond shadow of doubt that Copy protection doesnt work at all . It never did and never will untill we keep doing Read and Write operations ? . This gives the reason to unlockers rants " Everything they make, we can break! " on the net .What a delibracy .I would rather agree with most views presented by Jan Waclawek . I dont understand the taboo of discussing copy protection doesnt it make us more strong and equipped to tackle the situation and device much more fooling methods.I have seen delibrate advertisements on the net as well as in magazines stating charges for unlocking 89S51, 52 the most vulnerable parts . Its our not discussing the issue wont stop the menance ? . If we keep the forum mumb over the issue we would be lagging behing those high energy idiots who takes only 8-10 components and a programmer to gets into your MCU / though not an OTP which is another issue . will you call below artical a theaft " http://cryptome.org/a51-bsw.htm by Adi Shamir " It certainly leads to a more robust and hardcore product design . OTOH what was the crime commited by this poor person whos MCU codes was robbed ? This shows the delicate demarcation between the wrong side and the right side of the discussion. AP PS: Well Steiner its your whish and not ours what you allow in your forum and what not according to your country law and rules. |
