Alternate mark inversion is a modulation technique having nothing at all to do with any protocol. All the modulator requires is a T-flipflop and a 2x clock. A transformer is necessary for long lines, however, and some sort of buffer is needed to drive the transformer from Q and /Q. Demodulating requires a 2x clock driving a D flipflop and an XOR gate.
