I find that few people under 50 years of age pay much attention to anything that doesn't happen on their cellphones, the TV, or some chat space. While still in my early 30s it occurred to me that the most ironic thing about life is that just when you get to the point of knowing enough to be useful, you die. This point is lost on most people who are under 50. There may be some profound philosophical concept involved here, but I'm not quite sure what it is. On the other hand, maybe it's a necessary part of life. As you get older, your BS detector becomes more finely tuned. By the time you're in your second half-century, you realize that most of what goes on in the world is major league BS. One gets tired of it all. Perhaps that allows us to accept death with a certain grace and thereby make room for the next generation of idiots who will continue to make a mess of the world. It provides for survival of the species. Whether or not this is a good thing is debatable. Imagine what we'd know if we lived to be 200. |
