#144492 - it's the other way round
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I cannot speak for others, so this post is entirely subjective.

Ok, first of all, Jan, your English is fine and actually getting slowly better all the time from what I can tell.

Thank you, Sir.

I am always amazed at you guys who can speak more than one language.

I don't really deserve this - I am slowly forgetting my mother tongue, Hungarian - I use it very seldom, only when talking with my mother and a few clients. I am really bad in languages in general.

Your comment, however, made me start thinking about the best way to communicate on this forum. Clearly, the English skills of the people here are all over the map .. from those who can barely express themselves to those who use fancy words like "reflexively" (automatic, like a reflex) and "orthography" (spelling) and even "anthropomorphic metaphor" (anthropomorphic metaphor).

These are all easy, at least for me. Latin/greek words such as these are used - with very slight variations - perhaps in all European and many non-European languages. Often, as showoff in the given language... :-) (there is also a nice story in the Feynman book on this, when in Brasil he can't remember the Portugese word for "therefore", so he uses "consequentemente", shocking his Brasil friends...).

There are also words which I don't understand. But that's not really a problem.

English, for a couple of reasons, has an astonishing vocabulary. Certainly an order of magnitude bigger than my language (Slovak); maybe even more. When learning a foreign language, one tries to map the words of his language to that other language (it's not easy to think in a foreign language and won't happen until a certain moment in the learning process). If there is such a big discrepancy between the two languages, there is a big big problem with this mapping.

But, the way from English to my language is easy, at least reading the posts: I can use an offline memory, a lookup table so to say, for the terms I don't understand (... a dictionary). My problem is in the other way: I want to express myself, but cannot decide which is the "proper" expression among the dozen equivalents of the single word in my language.

So, it's not about you should try to use simpler language. The problem is, whether I can convey my ideas, using my Pidgin.
