When I recently made the shift to FIREFOX, I found that it spell-checks and points out my typo's. Yeah, like the apostrophe you put between the slang word typo and the s, which is used to indicate plural. I suppose one could argue that that typo's is a contraction of typographical errors but that's reeeeeeeeally stretching it. I found that in one of the newspaper style guides published a few years back. I did find it specifically listed, though under what I considered a strange application of the general rule. That's how I've been doing it ever since. In general, however, apostrophes are used to indicate contractions or possessives. They're NEVER used as plurals, unless those are contractions or possessives. ;)
-a PS: why use all-caps for the proper noun Firefox? It's not an acronym. No, but it's done for emphasis. I got in the habit of doing that with any sort of relatively specific product, whether hardware or software, so persons looking for references to them could find them more easily. RE |
