Sounds like you came to the same conclusions I did Jez. Great chip, killer tools but with a bit of a learning curve. Programming them is a curse - why they decided to use a bizzare bootloader method in these newer parts is beyond me - it is a pain to remove power all the time and reload the bootloader crap.
If they did isp like most of the other manufacturer's products, there'd be no cause for complaint.
