It needs to establish some nice interface for plugins.
I am afraid this is not the easiest task to accomplish.

My suggestion is to have support for various derivative's timing (perhaps user definable). Some of them - namely the fast SiLabs and uPSDs - have jump caches, for these this might turn out to be relatively tricky.

Nevertheless, first, get the vanilla right is an impressive task too.
