I was thinking that it would be relativly easy to pipe the serial bit stream to and from something like yyperterminal but interfacing to random bits of code would be tricky unless you wrote it so that it supports a bus interface such as wishbone which is a standard for asic/fpga designs, but that prolly a later refinement for then the basic code is working.
